The Crossing Continues

Dave devoted his life to helping others make a crossing — from adolescence into adulthood, from uncertainty into courage, from promise into action.

The currents he set in motion now move through us. Each time we step away from the familiar, each time we choose courage over comfort, each time we return changed and offer something back, we are participating in that same rhythm.

Carry It Forward

At his core, Dave was always a teacher. No matter what he was working on, he always made time to sit down with a student, staff member or friend, if he saw an opportunity to teach - ideally with a nice cup of Cowboy coffee in hand. The concept of the medicine wheel, which he first encountered in the book Seven Arrows, inspired him to share the belief that every experience in life can be looked at as a teacher in some way. This perspective allows one to avoid being a victim to circumstance.

Take someone on their first canoe trip

Spend time on the land without agenda

Gather in circle and listen deeply

Keep a promise that matters

Step away from the familiar

Choose courage over comfort

Return changed, and offer something back

Live in the present

Pay attention to what has heart and meaning

Be open, not attached to outcome

Stop and move roadkill to a better place

Teeth to the wind.
